Who we are
carprices.uk is an independent website run by a sole trader in the UK. It is not connected to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or any government body. Contact: hello@carprices.uk.
The number plate you enter
A vehicle registration mark can be personal data when it is linked to a person, so we treat every plate you type as if it were.
- What happens: the plate is sent to our server in the body of the form (never in the web address), passed to DVSA’s MOT History API to fetch the record, and used to build the page you see.
- Storage: we don’t store it. The result is held in server memory for up to 10 minutes under a salted hash so a refresh doesn’t trigger another lookup, then discarded. There is no database of lookups.
- Logging: our request logs record the page requested, the response code and how long it took. They never include the plate or the form contents.
- Lawful basis: legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): providing the check you asked for, using data DVSA publishes for exactly this purpose. You can object by not using the service; there is nothing to erase afterwards.
- DVSA: DVSA sees the plate as part of the API request and processes it under its own MOT history API privacy notice.
Your IP address
To stop automated scraping of vehicle records, we count lookups per IP address in server memory for one minute at a time and then forget them. IP addresses are not written to logs and not combined with the plates looked up.
Cookies and local storage
The site sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. We don’t run analytics or advertising scripts. If we add advertising in future it will only load after you agree to it, and this notice will be updated first.
How we count visits and clicks
Instead of analytics scripts, our server keeps simple daily totals: how many checks were run, and how many times each partner button was clicked, from which page and which position on it. The totals contain no plate, no IP address and nothing that identifies you or your device.
Partner links
Buttons marked “Ad” lead to partner websites (for example car-buying services, vehicle-history-check providers and garage-booking sites). When you click one, your browser passes through a short redirect on our site (which adds one to that button’s daily total) and goes on to theirs, where their privacy notice applies. The link may include an identifier that tells the partner the visit came from us so we can be paid a commission. We don’t send them your plate or anything you typed.
Your rights
You have the usual UK GDPR rights: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. Because we don’t keep personal data about visitors, there is normally nothing to provide or delete, but you can ask at the contact address above. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
We’ll update this page when the service changes, for example if tax data or advertising is added.
