About carprices.uk

What this is

A free car check built on open government data. Type a number plate and you get the MOT history DVSA holds for that vehicle: every test since 2005, the mileage recorded at each one, the advisories and defects, the outstanding-recall flag and the date the current MOT runs out. We add a mileage timeline that flags drops and gaps, and plain-English explanations of what the advisories mean.

What this is not

We are not DVSA, DVLA or GOV.UK, and we have no official status. Our data is the same open data anyone can get, presented differently. It can lag a day or two behind a test and it does not include outstanding finance, write-off or theft markers, number of owners, or tax status. For tax use GOV.UK’s tax check; for finance and write-offs you need a paid history check.

Where the data comes from

The DVSA MOT History API, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

How the site makes money

The check is free and we don’t sell your data. Instead, results pages show three partner buttons, each labelled “Ad”: one for selling the car, one for a paid full history check, and one for MOT, servicing, warranty or breakdown cover. If you click through and go on to buy or sell, the partner may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra and never changes what the data says.

We deliberately do not link to car finance or leasing. Introducing people to lenders is a regulated activity in the UK and we are not authorised to do it.

Accuracy

We show DVSA’s records as they are. Our anomaly flags are hints to prompt questions, not verdicts: a mileage drop can be a tester’s typo, a replaced instrument cluster or a wound-back odometer, and only paperwork and an inspection can tell you which. Don’t buy or sell a car on this page alone.
